Crowned the state flower of Washington, it is also known as the Coast Rhododendron, the California Rhododendron, or the California Rosebay. Very few plants in the Rhododendron genus are native to North America.
The Pacific Rhododendron is found primarily west of the Cascades, ranging all the way from Northern California to Southern British Columbia in Canada. Beautiful clusters of large, 5-lobed pink flowers against whorled leathery leaves. They bloom from April to May, and seeds are typically ‘ripe’ for dispersal in August to September. Wildlife use this for year-round coverage and protection but is typically not a food source. This plant is one of the few native plants that seems to be purely ornamental or used for protection.
