Cascara can be considered a tall deciduous shrub or small tree with a beautiful gray bark and large, deeply ribbed oval leaves that begin as a dark green and turn yellow and eventually an orangey-red in the fall. Cascara produces small creamy greenish-yellow flowers which attract butterflies followed by purplish-black bead-like fruit that are easily loved by many native birds. Spanish priests in California gave the plant the name Cascara sagrada, meaning “sacred bark”. The bark, when dried and aged, has been prized medicinally first by Native Americans and then popularized as a very effective natural laxative. Cascara is a common ingredient in natural laxatives found today. Cascara is known to be highly adaptable, flourishing in a wide range of soil and sun conditions, and is mostly pest and disease free.
